SAN JOSE, Calif. (January 9, 2024) – Megumi Oishi and Karen Wang turned in impressive efforts to lead Northwestern fencing over the weekend at USA Fencing's January North American Cup (NAC) in San Jose, Calif.
Oishi continued the fast start to her 2023-24 campaign with a pair of top-10 finishes in the sabre. In the Division I section of the event, the Portland, Ore. product raced through pool action with a sparkling 5-0 record before adding three wins in the tableau on the way to a 10th-place finish. Oishi capped off her stay at the McEnery Convention Center by taking fifth in the junior competition, picking up three victories following another perfect run through pool play.
Seeing action in the Junior Women's Epee, Wang entered the tableau coming off a strong 5-1 showing in her pool bouts. After receiving an opening-round bye, the Houston, Texas native scored a trio of triumphs, highlighted by a 15-12 win over 17th-seeded Natalie Leung to advance to the Round of 32. Wang also competed in the Division I portion of the epee, where she took 63rd.
Rowan Park paced Northwestern's foilists on the weekend, securing 33rd in the Division I competition. Competing in her home state, Park, who hails from Hermosa Beach, Calif., was dominant in pool action, finishing with an unblemished 6-0 record en route to her aforementioned finish.
