Chumbley Rallies For Victory In Home Opener Against No. 6 Nebraska

Wildcats host No. 3 Iowa on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
EVANSTON, Ill. (January 26, 2024) – Trevor Chumbley used a third-period rally to secure a thrilling victory as Northwestern (0-3, 0-2 B1G) fell to No. 6 Nebraska (8-1, 3-1 B1G), 39-3, this evening in the Wildcats' 2023-24 home opener inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Staring at a 4-2 deficit with only 90 seconds remaining in his 157-pound tilt with Ethan Stiles, Chumbley tallied his first takedown of the evening to jump in front, 5-4. Following a Stiles' escape that knotted it up at 5-5, the St. Charles, Ill. native came out on top in a scramble that led to the bout's deciding takedown inside the final 30 seconds, sealing an 8-5 victory that sees Chumbley, who is ranked 19th nationally, improve to 11-5 on the season.
In a matchup of two wrestlers ranked inside the top 20 at 165 pounds, No. 15 Maxx Mayfield and No. 18 Antrell Taylor both refused to blink in regulation, each tallying an escape as the two headed to sudden victory deadlocked at 1-1. After seeing Mayfield roll through his initial attack, Taylor secured a takedown on the edge of the mat with just over 20 seconds gone to secure a 4-1 victory.
