Northwestern back in action next weekend at Washington Invitational, Blue Demon Alumni Classic

CHICAGO, Ill. (January 19, 2024) – Ava Earl and Skye Ellis both took home individual victories as Northwestern cross country opened the indoor portion of its 2023-24 schedule this afternoon at the Aurora Grand Prix in Chicago, Ill.

Competing in the mile run, Earl turned in a dominant effort inside the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center.  Fresh off an appearance at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships this past November, the Girdwood, Alaska native shaved seven seconds off her previous personal best in the event, crossing in 4:42.74 as she outdistanced her next closest competitor by over 12 seconds en route to victory.

Making her collegiate debut on the track, Ava Criniti clocked in at 4:57.00 to take fourth in the mile, edging out Kalea Bartolotto (5th; 4:57.32) by just 32 one-hundredths of a second.  Rachel Sessa checked in sixth at 5:00.64 to round out a showing that saw Wildcats occupy four of the top six spots on the event leaderboard.

Closing out the day in the 3,000m run, Northwestern established itself at the front of the pack early on the way to laying claim to the top five finishing positions.  Leading the charge was Ellis, who raced through at 9:42.64 to claim a victory in her first collegiate track outing.

Anna Hightower (9:48.20) and Fiona Lenth (9:48.89) were separated by just over a half-second, finishing second and third, respectively, while Jackie Holman (9:56.02) narrowly bested Maddy Whitman (5th; 9:56.34) for fourth.  Whitney Currie battled her way inside the top 10, taking eighth at 10:16.11.

Northwestern splits its squad next weekend, January 26-27, sending athletes to both the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash. and the Blue Demon Alumni Classic in Chicago, Ill.
