Wildcats, Terrapins to meet for seventh time

EVANSTON, Ill. (January 12, 2024) – Northwestern wrestling begins its run through the Big Ten Conference gauntlet on Sunday, January 14 when it visits Maryland for a 12 p.m. (CT) dual inside the XFINITY Center Pavilion in College Park, Md.

LAST TIME OUT
Four Wildcats took home podium finishes as Northwestern played host to the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. back on December 29-30.  Trevor Chumbley paced the attack for the 'Cats, taking home a runner-up finish at 157 pounds, while Maxx Mayfield battled his way to the first Midlands podium showing of his career, checking in fourth at 165 pounds.

Bolstered by a 12-10 victory over top-seeded Layne Malczewski (Michigan State) in the 184-pound consolation bracket, Troy Fisher landed seventh overall.  Sam Cartella, who competed unattached, enjoyed a breakout performance at 149 pounds, notching a pair of bonus-point triumphs en route to taking eighth.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland sits at 2-1 on the year following non-conference wins over American, 30-7, and Morgan State, 35-6.  The Terrapins open their Big Ten slate on Friday night, entertaining No. 13 Michigan at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.

Piloted by fifth-year head coach Alex Clemsen, the Maryland lineup features six wrestlers who appear in the latest InterMat Rankings.  Leading the way for that group is the pairing of Jaxon Smith and Kal Miller.  Ranked fifth at 197 pounds, Smith, who took third at last season's Big Ten Championships, sits at 8-2 on the year and earned a runner-up finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, where he knocked off top-seeded Tanner Sloan (South Dakota State).  Holding an impressive 9-1 mark, Miller has rocketed up to No. 14 at 141 pounds following a 12-4 major decision win over two-time All-American Cole Matthews in the Terrapins' dual meet with Pittsburgh back on November 20.

SERIES STUFF
Northwestern and Maryland will clash for the seventh time on Sunday afternoon in a series that traces its roots back to the 2014 season.  The 'Cats have prevailed in each of the previous six matchups, most recently dealing the Terrapins a 29-7 defeat back on February 6, 2022 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
