Graduate student leads trio of Wildcats in double figures with 17 kills
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (September 4, 2023) - Maddy Chinn ripped a career-high 17 kills, leading a trio of Wildcats in double figures, but host Milwaukee did just enough to hold off Northwestern in a 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23 victory this evening inside the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
Tonight's result sees the Panthers improve to 3-4 on the year, while the Wildcats fall to 2-3.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Northwestern jumped out to an early 5-3 lead on a tandem block by Alexa Rousseau and Leilani Dodson. Milwaukee stepped on the gas shortly after, racing in front 11-6 following a 5-0 run that gave the hosts control. Staring at a 24-18 deficit, Northwestern staged a furious late rall, with back-to-back Kathryn Randorf kills sparking a 5-0 surge that saw the 'Cats close within one 24-23. The hill proved to big to climb, as Milwaukee went on to close out a 25-23 victory.
SET 2 | Still feeding off momentum from the end of the first set, Northwestern came out firing on all cylinders in the second frame, racing out to an 11-3 lead on the strenghth of five kills from Chinn. Milwuakee used a 4-0 spurt to close back within seven, 19-12, but never threatened in the set as an Averie Hernandez kill wrapped up a 25-14 win that evened the match at a set apiece.
SET 3 | The third set followed a similar script to that of the first, as Northwestern found itself in an early 5-1 hole. Slowly but surely, the Wildcats chipped away, ultimately pulling even at 11-11 on a block by Chinn and Randorf. Rousseau give Northwestern its first lead of the set at 13-12 when she snuck an attack effort over the net. After stretching the gap to 15-13 on a Dodson spike, Milwaukee answered back, racing in front, 20-16, following five unanswered points. Northwestern would get no closer than two the rest of the way as Milwaukee secured a 25-22 triumph to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
SET 4 | After seeing Milwaukee open up a 10-7 lead, Northwestern battled back within one, 10-9, following a solo block from Kennedy Hill that was followed by a tandem denial from Dodson and Randorf. Hill stepped up in the middle to put the 'Cats back on level terms at 16-16 as Northwestern looked to force a fifth set. With Milwaukee holding on to a 21-18 lead, another Hill kill sparked a push the saw Northwestern rattle of five of the next six points, the last of which came on a Panther block error that put the 'Cats up, 23-22. That would prove to be the extent of the comeback, as Milwaukee closed the night on a 3-0 run to finish off the match in a 25-22 win.
