EVANSTON, Ill. β Northwestern Field Hockey head coach Tracey Fuchs announced the addition of Tristan Clemons to the coaching staff as an assistant coach on Thursday.
Β
Clemons will work extensively with the Wildcats' goalkeepers and returns to Evanston after previously serving as a volunteer assistant on Fuchs' staff for three seasons, most recently during the Wildcats' 2021 spring season.
Β
"We are very excited to welcome Tristan back to work with our Field Hockey team this season," said Fuchs. "He brings valuable experience both as a coach and a player at the highest level,Β and we look forward to this experience helping our goalkeepers as we vie for championships.Β Tristan shares the values of our program and his expertise will help NU Field Hockey continue to strive for excellence."
Clemons' impressive history as a successful goalkeeper for the Australian Men's Hockey Team initially spanned eight years of international representation, encompassing 51 appearances on the global stage. Notably, he played significant matches at the 2017 World League Final and the 2015 and 2017 Oceania Cup, showcasing his unwavering dedication to the sport. This past spring, Clemons returned to the international stage as a player, qualifying for the USA Field Hockey Team at the Pan American Hockey 5's World Cup.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity to rejoin with the Wildcats after a few years away from the program," said Clemons. "Since coming to the US from Australia, Northwestern has been my team, and I am so fortunate to be afforded the opportunity to work again with such a fantastic coaching staff in Tracey Fuchs, Georgia Holland, and Will Byrne, along with such a talented and motivated playing group."
After announcing his retirement from professional field hockey in 2018, Clemons transitioned into a volunteer assistant role with Northwestern Field Hockey. After joining the staff, the Wildcats celebrated a remarkable series of accomplishments, including making back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in the 2019, 2021 during Clemons' last two seasons with the program while working with current wildcat goalkeepers Annabel Skubisz and Jamie Marold.
Beyond his achievements on the field, Clemons earned his doctoral degree from the University of Western Australia, specializing in the School of Molecular Sciences. His academic excellence is further highlighted by his role as a professor at the School of Polymer Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi.
Clemons' distinguished career has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious 'Hockey Australia Personal Excellence Award' in 2016. This recognition honors his outstanding accomplishments both within the sport and beyond, reflecting his steadfast dedication to academic pursuits, strong work ethic, and sportsmanship.
"Hockey as a sport has given me so much over my career playing both for Australia and now with Team USA, being able to coach and pass on some of that knowledge is an opportunity to give back in just a small way for which I am truly grateful for," said Clemons.
