Russell Payne to Serve as Assistant Coach for USMNT

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head men's soccer coach Russell Payne has been appointed as an assistant coach on the United States Men's National Team for the 2023 Concacaf Nations League Finals and 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.
The United States will square off with Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League Semifinal on Thursday, June 15 at 9 p.m. CT at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner of Thursday night's semifinal will advance to the Concacaf Nations League Final on June 18 at 7:30 p.m. CT at Allegiant Stadium, with the losing team playing in the third-place game at 5 p.m. CT.
Payne will also assist the National Team in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, which begins on June 24, with the United States taking on Jamaica at Soldier Field to open group stage competition. The United States will also play group stage games in St. Louis, Mo. and Charlotte, N.C. as well, hoping to advance to the knockout round and defend its 2021 Gold Cup title.
Following his U.S. Men's National Team duties, Payne will return to Evanston for his third season leading the Wildcats.

Payne previously served as an assistant for the U.S. Men's National Team during the 2015 Concacaf Gold Cup and 2016 Copa America. He joins Jason Kreis, Marko Mitrovic, and Phil Weddon on head coach B.J.
