WASHINGTON D.C. — Izzy Scane has been named the 2023 women's Tewaaraton Award winner, bestowed annually to the nation's top player in men's and women's lacrosse.
Scane is the first Wildcat to win the award since Shannon Smith took home the honor in 2011. Scane now becomes the fourth 'Cat to win the award, alongside Smith, Kristen Kjellman (2006, 2007) and Hannah Nielsen (2008, 2009).
Fresh off helping lead Northwestern to its first national championship since 2012, Scane, who was tabbed as IWLCA's Player of the year on Wednesday, has added another piece of hardware to her expansive resume following the Tewaaraton Foundation's Thursday announcement.
After rehabbing from an ACL tear which sidelined her for the entire 2022 season, Scane didn't miss a step in her return for the Lake Show. The Clarkston, Michigan, native led the nation in scoring with 99 goals — a mark which set the program-record for single-season scores. With her fourth goal in the national title game — an 18-6 rout of Boston College — Scane not only set the record for single-season goals, but also became Northwestern's all-time leading goalscorer with 288 scores.
Scane, a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award in 2021, collected a bevy of individual and team hardware in 2023. With a 4.95 goals per game average, Scane torched opposing defenses all season long, earning unanimous Big Ten Attacker of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten honors en route to a sweep of the conference's regular season and tournament championships. In the NCAA Tournament, Scane's 18 goals (4.5 goals per game) earned her Most Outstanding Player honors.
Scane has already announced her intent to return to Northwestern in 2024 and will have a chance to become the third Wildcat to win the Tewaaraton Award in back-to-back seasons.
