EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern travels to Ann Arbor on Friday to take on Michigan for a three-game series. Friday and Saturday's contests will be streamed live on B1G+, while Sunday's finale will be televised on Big Ten Network.
The Wildcats (8-35, 3-15 B1G) look to snap a mini four-game skid against the Wolverines (23-22, 10-8 B1G). It is the 166th all-time meeting between the two Big Ten founding members, with the first meeting coming in 1882. Northwestern last split a two-game series with Michigan in College Park, Md. in April 2021, with the 'Cats taking game two 4-1.
The 'Cats are coming off a hard-fought series against Indiana. Northwestern took the Hoosiers to 12 innings in Saturday's contest before ultimately falling 5-2, then battled in a back-and-forth 11-9 loss on Sunday.
First-year Sam Garewal tossed the best outing of his collegiate career on Saturday, allowing just four hits, no walks and no runs while striking out seven over 6.1 stellar innings. Garewal has posted a 3.68 ERA in his last four games (seven earned runs in 17.1 innings), along with 16 strikeouts to only three walks.
The Wildcats fell 3-2 to Milwaukee in their mid-week matchup on Tuesday. Matt McClure, Ethan Sund, Ryan Keenan, and Reed Smith combined to throw 5.1 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and eight strikeouts. Alex Calarco led the offense with a 2-for-3 day out of the cleanup spot.
In his last two games, Calarco is 4-for-7 with a home run, two doubles, and two walks. The Wilmette native is hitting .291 with an .830 OPS in his sophomore season.
Following the Michigan series, Northwestern will take on Notre Dame at the historic Wrigley Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CT. Fans can purchase tickets here and follow along with the action on B1G+ or on Twitter @NUCatsBaseball.
