‘Cats post impressive showings at US National Championships
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (April 28, 2023) – Led by podium finishes from Karen Wang and its sabre team, Northwestern fencing enjoyed a successful stay at the USA Fencing's April North American Cup (NAC) this past weekend in St. Louis, Mo.
Competing in the Division I Senior National Championships in the epee, Wang split six bouts in the pool round before going on a run through the tableau that featured four upsets of higher-seeded opposition. An Honorable Mention All-America selection this past March, Wang earned her spot on the podium with a 15-11 triumph over fourth-seeded Elizabeth Zigalo in the quarterfinals.
After dropping a semifinal-round matchup, the 'Cats sabre team consisting of Sky Miller, Megumi Oishi, and Kailing Sathyanath secured bronze in a 45-39 fence-off victory over the Boston Fencing Club.
In the junior sections of their respective weapons, both Wang and Oishi placed inside the top 25. Wang picked up two wins in the tableau en route to placing 21st, while Oishi, also an Honorable Mention All-American, checked in 22nd.
