Wildcats Head to Ruston to Battle Bulldogs

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern baseball will travel to Ruston, La. for a three-game series with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs this weekend at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT, with Saturday at 2 p.m. CT and Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. All three games will be streamed on CUSA.tv.
Last weekend, the 'Cats competed in the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Classic, falling at Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, and USC Upstate.
Michael Farinelli got the start on Friday, giving up two earned runs on three hits in four innings pitched, but the NU offense was unable to keep up, falling 6-2 to Gardner Webb.
Matt McClure got the ball on Saturday. In five innings pitched, McClure tallied six strikeouts, allowing three runs on six hits. After the Blue Hose ran out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Wildcats responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, the two runs were all the 'Cats could muster that day, falling 4-2.
On Sunday, Luke Benneche started and was the pitcher of record in a 9-0 loss to USC Upstate. Farinelli, McClure, and Benneche are the projected starters for this weekend's three games,
The Wildcats have been led offensively by Vincent Bianchina's .273 batting average and .885 OPS. Elon-transfer Griffin Arnone leads the 'Cats in RBI, having driven in four through six games this season.
Louisiana Tech enters the weekend's series at 5-4 overall, having split a pair of midweek matchups with defending National Champion Ole Miss. C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jonathan Fincher projects to start on Friday night, having made three appearances so far this season, posting an ERA of 3.00. The Bulldogs are paced offensively by reigning C-USA Hitter of the Week Philip Mattulia. In eight games this season, Mattulia has slugged five home runs and 11 RBI.
Friday's meeting will be the first between Northwestern and Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs mark Northwestern's first Conference USA opponent since facing UAB to open last season.
Following the weekend series, Northwestern will return to Chicago to visit UIC for a crosstown matchup on Tuesday, March 7, at 4:05 p.m. CT.
