Northwestern Falls 79-54 to Maryland

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team took a 20-16 lead into the first quarter break, but eventually fell 79-54 to the Maryland Terrapins at home Thursday.
Paige Mott led the Wildcats (8-16, 1-12) with 15 points, while Sydney Wood tallied five steals and two blocks. Caileigh Walsh also tacked on six points and two steals and Jillian Brown helped out with nine points off the bench.
Northwestern shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 19 assists on 22 made field goals. Individually, Caroline Lau dished out the most for the Wildcats with four assists and Jasmine McWilliams also chipped in with three assists of her own.
The Northwestern defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 15 Maryland turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Wood's five steals led the way individually for the Wildcats.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-4, Northwestern went on a 9-0 run with 4:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Paige Mott, to take a 13-9 lead. The Wildcats then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 20-16 advantage. Northwestern did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Wildcats could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-22.
Maryland continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 43-24 advantage before Northwestern went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Lau, to trim its deficit to 43-31 with 4:20 to go in the third. Maryland countered and stretched its lead to 55-40 heading into the fourth.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-54. Northwestern once again took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 14 points in the paint.
