Northwestern victorious in all eight matches contested in Big Ten dual meet finale
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (February 12, 2023) – No. 13 Northwestern wrestling (7-3, 5-3 B1G) put an exclamation point on a banner weekend this afternoon, rolling to a 30-12 win over Purdue inside Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind.
Today's victory sees the Wildcats close the regular season at 7-3 overall, marking the first time since the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons that the program has posted back-to-back winning seasons. Northwestern also closed the year a 5-3 mark in Big Ten dual meets, its first winning conference campaign since 2017-18.
The 'Cats were victorious in all eight contested bouts this afternoon, picking up bonus points in five matches. Northwestern was dominant across the board, finishing the day with a 26-1 advantage in takedowns.
Trevor Chumbley was a force on the day at 157 pounds, bullying Brennan Doyle from the onset in a comprehensive 17-1 win by technical fall. The St. Charles, Ill. native used a pair of four-point near falls to pad his advantage ahead of a takedown 24 seconds into the third period to cement his 21st win of the year.
In a 149-pound tilt with Jaden Reynods, Yahya Thomas picked up a career-best 19th win in a 15-5 major decision victory. The local product racked up six takedowns on his way to his eighth Big Ten win of the season and his second victory by major decision in as many bouts.
Troy Fisher kicked off a stretch of three straight major decisions for the 'Cats at 174 pounds, dispatching Macartney Parkinson by a 12-3 final. Fisher entered the third period with a 5-2 edge but stepped on the gas in the to close out his day, adding a reversal and two takedowns in the final frame.
Fresh off an impressive showing against Northern Illinois on Friday night, Evan Bates carried over momentum in an 11-3 win over Ben Vanadia. Wrestling at 184 pounds, Bates imposed his will early, taking down the Boilermaker nine seconds in before riding him out for the remainder of the period. He added a four-point near fall in the third period to help lock up a second consecutive major decision on the weekend.
Coming off a big win of his own on Friday, Andrew Davison started fast at 197 pounds and never looked back against Mitch Hutmacher en route to winning, 10-2. Davison put up four takedowns and amassed over four minutes of riding time on his way to a second Big Ten triumph.
At 165 pounds, Maxx Mayfield secured a 5-3 finish to his Big Ten dual meet slate, putting away Stoney Buell, 10-3. As was a theme for the Wildcats on the day, Mayfield jumped in front early ahead of adding three takedowns during the third period.
Chris Cannon got Northwestern on the board in a 4-1 win against Dustin Norris at 133 pounds. Cannon opened up a 3-1 lead entering the third period, where he rode Norris for all two minutes.
Lucas Davison extended his current win streak to seven matches, capping off the day with a 6-1 win against Hayden Copass in a 285-pound clash. Davison was never threatened, totaling a trio of takedowns to close out a 7-1 run through Big Ten action.
