Chumbley earns runner-up finish at 157 pounds to lead Northwestern

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (December 30, 2023) – Four Wildcats secured podium finishes as Northwestern wrestling played host to the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships this weekend inside the NOW Arena in suburban Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Trevor Chumbley led the way for the 'Cats, taking second at 157 pounds to secure his second Midlands podium finish in as many years.Β  Chumbley scored bonus-point wins over James Harrington (Harvard) by technical fall, 20-5, and Jude Fisher (Penn) by major decision, 10-2, before besting Central Michigan's Johnny Lovett in tiebreakers, 2-1, in a razor-thin semifinal-round matchup.

Maxx Mayfield battled to a Midlands podium finish for the first time in his career, landing fourth overall at 165 pounds.Β  Mayfield tallied a pair of wins by technical fall en route to a semifinal-round berth.Β  After falling to eventual 165-pound champion Dean Hamiti (Wisconsin) in the semifinals, the Lincoln, Neb. product notched an 8-1 win in consolation action against Chris Moore (Illinois).

Troy Fisher grinded out a seventh-place finish at 184 pounds, opening his tournament with back-to-back victories by fall.Β  Fisher rattled off three straight wins in consolation action, highlighted by a thrilling 12-10 upset of top-seeded Layne Malczewski (Michigan State) to clinch a podium finish.Β  He went on to defeat Hayden Filipovich (Purdue) by a 7-3 final in the seventh-place match to conclude his stay.

Competing unattached at 149 pounds, Sam Cartella enjoyed a breakout performance on his way to an eighth-place finish.Β  Cartella opened action with three straight victories, knocking off fifth-seeded Quinn Kinner (Rider), 7-5, to punch his ticket to the quarterfinal round.Β  After dropping into consolation action, the first-year locked up his spot on the podium with a dominant 16-0 technical fall win over Jaivon Jones (Northern Illinois).Β
