Redshirt senior earns second consecutive podium finish at event

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 2, 2023) – For the second time in as many seasons, Trevor Chumbley earned a podium finish as Northwestern competed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas (CKLV) Invitational this weekend in Las Vegas, Nev.

Wrestling at 157 pounds, Chumbley, who made his 2023-24 debut inside the Paradise Event Center, closed his weekend at 4-3 overall en route to placing eighth overall.  After dropping his opening bout of the event, the St. Charles, Ill. native rattled off four straight wins on the backside of the bracket, three of which came against opponents who appear in the latest FloWrestling Division I Rankings.  He secured his spot on the podium in his final matchup of Friday evening, grinding out a 2-1 decision over No. 19 Meyer Shaprio (Cornell).

Chumbley's performance in Las Vegas this past weekend marks the fifth straight CKLV Invitational that a Wildcat has finished on the podium at 157 pounds.

Like Chumbley, Maxx Mayfield looked to engineer a run of his own in consolation action, falling just a win shy of earning a podium spot at 165 pounds.  Out of Lincoln, Neb., Mayfield, who opened his stay in the desert with a 5-0 shutout of Elijah Blake (Cal Poly) before dropping into the back half of the bracket, scored a thrilling 12-10 decision victory over AJ Kovacs (North Carolina State) during the consolation rounds.

The trio of Troy Fisher (184 pounds), Jack Jessen (285 pounds), and Joel VanderVere (141 pounds) also posted bonus-point victories for Northwestern.  Making the first appearance of his career at 184 pounds, Fisher dazzled in his tournament opener, dispatching Braden Smelser (CSU Bakersfield) by fall at 5:47.  Jessen, who, like Fisher, made his heavyweight debut, blitzed Cade Lautt (North Carolina) from the opening whistle in a 22-8 major decision victory in the Round of 32.  VanderVere, fresh off winning the 141-pound crown at the season-opening Michigan State Open in his last action, blanked Blake Bryant (Morgan State) by a 16-0 scoreline to win by technical fall (3:16) in the consolation round.
