'Cats Host Flames for Season Opener

11/8/2023 7:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's basketball (0-0) will kick off their 2023-24 season on Thursday evening against the UIC Flames (1-0) at Welsh Ryan Arena. The game is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m., with action to be streamed on B1G+.

Head coach Joe McKeown is set to begin his 16th season at the helm, and he'll welcome back three returning starters in Jasmine McWilliams, Caileigh Walsh, and Paige Mott. The team is also gaining promising newcomers, including first year Casey Harter, who showed out in her Welsh-Ryan debut last Thursday in an exhibition against the Flyers. The guard led all newcomers with 19 minutes on the floor, using it to log a team-high seven rebounds along with three assists and three points.

Northwestern as a whole had a strong preview to their season in the exhibition, beating the Flyers 80-54 in the exhibition at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Junior Melannie Daley led the team, scoring 18 points with two steals and two blocks, and Mott contributed ten points, seven rebounds, and one block. The Wildcat defense was a force on the court, holding the Flyers to only 26.3 percent shooting from the field. Northwestern was unstoppable at gaining second chances with a total of 49 rebounds and 12 second-chance points.

The 'Cats will host the flames in a home opener for the fifth time in program history, having come out victorious in each of the previous four. Northwestern holds a 22-6 overall advantage in the all-time series and enters Thursday's action with a six-game active win streak against UIC, dating back to 2014.

After their opener, Northwestern will remain at home to take on Omaha on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. That game is set to tip off at 2 p.m.
