Graduate student is 16th First Team All-B1G honoree in program history
EVANSTON, Ill. (November 30, 2023) – Following an outstanding 2023 season, Northwestern graduate student Julia Sangiacomo (Sonoma, Calif./Justin-Sienna/Santa Clara) has been selected as a First Team All-Big Ten Conference honoree, the league office announced on Thursday. This marks the fourth consecutive season that a Wildcat has garnered First Team All-B1G honors.
After arriving in Evanston following a four-year stay at Santa Clara University, Sangiacomo put together a dominant campaign in her lone season with the 'Cats. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter pelted a team-high 380 kills en route to averaging 4.09 kills per set, a mark that ranked sixth overall in the conference.
Just the 16th First Team All-Big Ten honoree in program history, Sangiacomo reached double figures in kills on 21 occasions. She cracked the 20-kill mark six times and posted five double-double efforts.
Sangiacomo put together two of the top individual match performances in program history over a six-day span in October. In a road matchup with No. 17 Purdue on October 1, the Sonoma, Calif. native ripped a career-high 33 kills, the second most in a single match in Wildcat annals, while hitting .400 (33-7-65) as the 'Cats rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a thrilling five-set win over the Boilermakers. Sangiacomo followed up that performance by hammering 32 kills on October 7 in another five-set triumph at Michigan State, an effort that is tied for third all-time for a single match at Northwestern.
In addition to the announcement of the All-Big Ten Teams, the conference also announced its 14 Sportsmanship Award Honorees, with Natalie Chizzo (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) taking home the accolade for the 'Cats.
Northwestern finished the 2023 season with a 15-15 overall record that included a 9-11 ledger in Big Ten Conference play. The Wildcats' nine Big Ten wins marked the program's top win total in league action since the 2010 season.
