HENDERSON, NV -- Northwestern women's basketball dropped their second game of the Ball Dawgs Classic on Friday at the Dollar Loan Center, falling 83-61 to the Belmont Bruins.
The Wildcats (3-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Hailey Weaver, who had 13 points and four steals. Casey Harter tacked on 12 points off of the bench and Caileigh Walsh helped out with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jasmine McWilliams pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Northwestern, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.
How It Happened
Northwestern struggled out of the gate and couldn't make up the difference in the first quarter, falling behind 27-17.
Northwestern chipped away at that deficit with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Weaver, to narrow the Bruins' lead to 34-24. The teams went back and forth through the rest of the quarter, bringing the score to 43-31 heading into halftime.
Belmont came out for the third ready and seized a 70-51 lead by the next break. Northwestern played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 83-61. The 'Cats got a boost from their bench in the period, with non-starters scoring all ten of their points.
