'Cats Down Flyers 80-54 in Exhibition

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench on the way to an 80-54 win against the Lewis Flyers at home Thursday in their sole exhibition match ahead of the 2023-24 season.
The Wildcats had two players score in double figures, led by Melannie Daley, who had 18 points, two steals and two blocks. Paige Mott tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds and Caroline Lau added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Northwestern utilized excellent ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 19 assists on 26 made field goals. Lau's six assists were the most for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 35-24 edge. The 'Cats forced eight Lewis turnovers in the period and turned them into four points.
Northwestern continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run in the third, punctuated by a three from Alana Goodchild. Before the quarter was over, the Wildcats added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 56-34 edge. Northwestern played well near the basket that period, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
Northwestern started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 66-34 with 7:29 to go in the contest. The Flyers narrowed the margin before the game was over, but the Wildcats still cruised to an 80-54 win.
