EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's basketball will return to the court on Sunday as they get set to take on the Omaha Mavericks at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip-off between the two teams is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and action will be streamed on B1G+.
The Wildcats (1-0) opened their regular season with an overtime victory against UIC on Thursday, bouncing back from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat the Flames 92-86. All five of Northwestern's starters reached double-digit scoring in the contest, led by Melannie Daley with 25, and three recorded double-doubles.
Among the standout performers was sophomore Caroline Lau, who nearly made history in her first game after taking over as the full-time starting point guard. Lau scored 16 points and notched 15 assists, the latter of which was one off from tying Nancy Kennelly's program record. Lau became just the second Wildcat all-time to record 15 or more assists and the first since 1993.
Along with Lau, both Caileigh Walsh and Paige Mott recorded double-doubles as well. Walsh fell just three assists shy of a triple-double, logging 19 points and 12 rebounds. Mott came close to history as well, becoming the fifth Wildcat in program history to record a 20+ rebound game. Her 20 boards were most by a Northwestern player since Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah in 2018.
Altogether, Lau, Walsh and Mott are the first Northwestern trio to record double-doubles in the same game since Nia Coffey, Maggie Lyon and Ashley Deary did so in February of 2016.
With their first win of the season in the books, Northwestern will match up with Omaha for the first time in program history on Sunday. The 'Cats are 5-1 against the Summit League all-time, with their only loss coming in 2002 to Denver.
After Sunday's game, Northwestern will hit the road for the first time this season to take on Notre Dame in South Bend on Wednesday. That game tips off at 6:00 p.m. CT on ACC Network.
