Skubisz, Coaching Staff Headline Field Hockey Big Ten Awards Haul

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Northwestern added to its loaded 2023 season accomplishments with a haul of Big Ten postseason awards, announced by the conference on Wednesday. Tracey Fuchs was named the unanimous Big Ten Coach of the Year, Annabel Skubisz earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and a conference-leading seven players were selected to All-Big Ten Field Hockey Teams.Β 

Fuchs and her coaching staff led Northwestern to a 16-1 record, winning the Big Ten regular season championship for the first time since 2013 en route to a unanimous selection for Coach of the Year. Finishing the season on a 16 game-winning streak, the Wildcats set a new program record for wins in a row, breaking the previous record of 14 wins set in 1985. Fuchs also collected her 200th win this season following a 3-0 victory over Maine. This is Fuchs' second time winning this award, having also done so in 2013.

Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year was awarded to Annabel Skubisz, who currently leads all Division I goalkeepers with a 0.859 save percentage and a 0.52. goals against average. Skubisz also leads the nation with 11 shutouts on the year, which ranks second in Northwestern single-season history.

Five Wildcats earned First Team All-Big Ten Honors, the most of any Big Ten program. Lauren Wadas headlined the group with an unanimous selection while Olivia Bent-Cole, Peyton Halsey, Alia Marshall, and Annabel Skubisz also were named to the first team. Greta Hinke and Ilse Tromp each picked up Second Team All-Big Ten selections. The seven All Big-Ten selections set a Northwestern record for most selections in a season, while their five First Team selections were the most since 1994.

Wadas led the team in shots with 56 while adding five goals and five assists. She was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Michigan in a 1-0 win on October 1.

With eight goals on the season, Bent-Cole currently ranks third on the team in goals. Bent-Cole started all 17 games as a true first-year and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after scoring twice in a 4-3 win over No. 12 Ohio State on September 22.

Halsey led the team with 11 goals scored in her fifth season with the Wildcats, tied for sixth most in the Big Ten. She also led the team in points with 31.Β 

Marshall currently leads the Big Ten and ranks second in the nation with 17 assists (1.0 assists per game). Her 24 points on the season are the second-most on the Wildcats.

Hinke andΒ Tromp were strong points on the Wildcats back line, anchoring the defense to 11 shutouts. Tromp added six goals of her own and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after scoring the opening goal in a 2-0 win at No. 3 Iowa on October 6.Β 

Northwestern earned a first-round bye in the 2023 Big Ten Tournament, and will be back on the field this Friday, November 3, in Ann Arbor to face the winner of Ohio State and Penn State at noon CT on Big Ten Network. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will take place on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 9 pm CT.
