EVANSTON, Ill. – Fresh off a successful 2022-23 season, the Northwestern men's basketball team will open the 2023-24 campaign with an exhibition contest against McKendree at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The game will air on B1G+ with Andy Masur (play-by-play) and Eli Berk (analyst) on the call.
The Wildcats return three starters (Ty Berry, Boo Buie, and Matthew Nicholson) from last season's team which earned the school's second-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2022-23, picking up a 75-67 win in the First Round over Boise State before falling 68-63 in the Second Round to UCLA.
Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins enters his 11th season leading the 'Cats. The reigning Big Ten Coach of the Year ranks third in program history with 155 wins in Evanston.
Collins has added six new Wildcats to the ranks this season: first-years Blake Barkley, Parker Strauss, and Jordan Clayton, and transfers Ryan Langborg, Justin Mullins, and Blake Preston.
Boo Buie embarks on his fifth and final season in Evanston ranking 10th in program history with 1,541 career points. The First Team All-Big Ten honoree averaged 17.3 points and 4.5 assists per game last season and was named a finalist for the 2023 Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball.
Ty Berry returns for his senior year after starting every game last season, averaging career-highs of 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Brooks Barnhizer looks to build on a breakout sophomore season that saw him playing his best basketball toward the end of the year, averaging 13.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game over a seven game span in February and March.
Northwestern has won 12 straight exhibition games, defeating Quincy 69-49 last season in an exhibition. The Wildcats last faced McKendree in 2018, defeating the Bearcats 83-44 in an exhibition game that marked the first game in the new Welsh-Ryan Arena with a sellout crowd of 7,039.
After winning the 2022-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference and earning a berth in the 2023 NCAA DII Tournament, McKendree was selected to finish fifth in the 2023-24 GLVC preseason poll.
Northwestern will open the regular season at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, November 6 with a matchup against Binghamton inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on B1G+ and WGN Radio 720. Tickets can be purchased for the regular season lidlifter here.
