Wildcats Battle No. 4 Penn State to 2-2 Draw

10/15/2023 6:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Despite outshooting No. 4 Penn State 28-4, Northwestern was unable to net the game-winner in a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Martin Stadium.

The draw moved Northwestern to 8-4-4 overall and 2-4-2 in Big Ten play after the draw.

How it Happened

Penn State took a 1-0 lead when Olivia Borgen scored in the 19th minute, assisted by Kaitlyn MacBean.

In the 24th minute, PSU was assessed a red card for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity, giving the Wildcats a one-player advantage and a penalty kick. Ella Hase placed the penalty kick past the Nittany Lion keeper, levelling the game at one apiece.

In the 32nd minute, Aurea del Carmen served a ball into the box, finding Ingrid Falls, who played through to Ella Hase, who tapped in the cross to give NU a 2-1 advantage into halftime. The Nittany Lions rallied to knot things up at 2-2 with a 51st-minute goal from Borgen and protected for the remainder of the game for a 2-2 draw.

Game Notes

  • Northwestern registered a season-high 28 shots, including 13 on goal.
  • The red card marks the third this season by a Wildcat opponent.
  • Ella Hase tallied her 9th and 10th goals of the season, moving into a tie for third-most in a single-season.
  • Aurea del Carmen and Ingrid Falls earned assists on Hase's second goal, the third assist of the season for del Carmen and Falls.
Northwestern continues Big Ten play with its regular season home finale against Minnesota on Thursday. Kickoff from Martin Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on B1G+.
