SPARKS, Md. - The defending national champion Northwestern lacrosse team will travel to Sparks, Md. to face the U.S. and Canadian U20 national teams in exhibition contests as part of the USA Lacrosse Fall Classic on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Wildcats face the Canada U20 team at 8:30 a.m. CT and the USA U20 team at 11:30 a.m. CT at Tierney Field at USA Lacrosse Headquarters. Both games will be streamed on USA Lacrosse's YouTube channel.
Northwestern head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller will coach the U.S. U20 team during the event, as she prepares the Americans for the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China from August 15-24. Scott Hiller, her husband and Northwestern assistant coach, will serve as the Wildcats' head coach for the Fall Classic. The U.S. women's U20 training team also consists of six current Northwestern players: Madison Taylor, Francesca Argentieri, Alexandra Blake, Abby LoCascio, Madison Smith, and Alexis Ventresca.
Led by Tewaaraton Award Winner Izzy Scane and IWLCA first team All-American Erin Coykendall, Northwestern will take on the U.S. U20 team for the first time in program history. The duo guided the Wildcats to the program's eighth national championship last season, thrashing Boston College 18-6 for the title in Cary, N.C. on May 28. After dropping the season-opener, NU won its next 21 straight games to claim Amonte Hiller's eighth championship, tying her for the most by a head coach in the sport's history.
Northwestern lacrosse recently announced fifth-years Dylan Amonte, Erin Coykendall, Hannah Gillespie, Jane Hansen, and Katie Shanley will return to the team for the 2024 season.
Earlier this week the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games shared its official proposal for five new Olympic sports including lacrosse (sixes) to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for potential inclusion in the 2028 Olympic sport program. Pending final vote on Monday (Oct. 16) in Mumbai, India, lacrosse would make its third appearance at the Olympic Games after St. Louis 1904 and London 1908.
