EVANSTON, Ill. β Junior goalkeeper Annabel SkubiszΒ was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after posting back-to-back shutouts against ranked competition this weekend, the conference announced Tuesday. It marked Skubisz's second career Big Ten weekly award after last bringing home the honors on November 1, 2021.
Skubisz allowed zero goals while playing all 120 minutes in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge against No. 18 Duke and No. 14 Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts. She now has eight career shutouts, this weekend passing Jessica Yates, Lindsay von der Luft and Schoen Liebert for sole possession of seventh place in Northwestern history.
This weekend marked the second time Skubisz has recorded consecutive shutouts, the previous instance coming in the first and second rounds of the 2021 NCAA Tournament when she held North Carolina and Iowa scoreless.
The Houston, Texas native holds a perfect 4-0 record in cage this season, helping Northwestern to its first 4-0 start since 2004 and its second straight week ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Skubisz has allowed just two goals in those four games, the best mark through the first four games of a season for the Wildcats since 1994. Her 0.51 goals against average ranks seventh in the nation and second in the Big Ten. She has also made eight saves and ranks second in the Big Ten with a .800 save percentage.
It's the second straight week that a Wildcat has taken home weekly conference honors after Bente Baekers was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on August 30.
