Young 'Cats lineup takes Top-6 spots in DeKalb to start 2022 campaign
DeKALB, Illinois -- Newcomer Skye Ellis' win led the way Friday night as Northwestern swept the five scoring spots and had seven of the first eight runners across the finish line at the season-opening First State Bank Huskie Challenge on Northern Illinois' North 40 Course.

Kicking off the season with a lineup that didn't include several of the Wildcats expected top runners, head coach Jill Miller's Wildcats overwhelmed the 5K competition 60 miles west of Chicago. Ellis, the 2022 Victorian State champion in cross country and the 800M in her native Australia, crossed the line in 18:21.38, more than 26-seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
"This was an ideal way to open the 2022 season, and get ready for next week's Big Ten Preview when we have the opportunity to see our entire roster run," Miller said. "Tonight we raced together at a controlled pace through 3K and then pushed hard over the last 2K. It's exciting to pull off a perfect score with this group as we expect them all to build confidence throughout the season."
Ellis was followed by senior Elizabeth Bulat, fellow rookie Maddy Whitman, sophomores Fiona Lenth and Whitney Currie, and first-year Serena Frolli to sweep the Top-6 spots.
Next weekend the 'Cats will head to Ann Arbor to get a preview of the course that will host the Big Ten Championships on October 28.
