Head coach Jill Miller's squad enters the Conference's premier event ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region by the USTFCCCA, and No. 29 in the nation, cracking the country's Top-30 for the first time in two decades. The 'Cats are one of five ranked teams in the field, along with No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 23 Michigan State, and the No. 26 ranked host Wolverines.
Northwestern will be led by senior Rachel McCardell, along with classmates Elizabeth Bulat, Hannah Hall and Olivia Verbeke, juniors Kalea Bartolotto and Ari Marks, sophomores Ava Earl, Katherine Hessler, Anna Hightower and Fiona Lenth, and rookies Serena Frolli and Maddy Whitman. McCardell, who finished fifth at last year's Big Ten Championships, has led Northwestern in each of her last three starts and dropped her 6K time in every outing.
The Wildcats last visit to the national rankings came at the end of the 2002 season, when the team rose as high as No. 27 in the country before finishing the season at No. 30. The NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll is conducted by counting votes from 11 member coaches – one from each of the division's nine regions (who also do the regional rankings) – as well as two members from the NCAA Cross Country Executive Committee.
