Northwestern Holds off Houston Baptist for 2-1 Victory

9/12/2022 9:50:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern secured a 2-1 victory over Houston Baptist Monday at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. The Wildcats improved to 1-3-2 overall and 1-1-2 at home.

"Any time you can come out of a game with some successful moments that you trained for, worked for, and being able to now build on is a big step," Northwestern Head Coach Russell Payne said. "Even more important for us now going into conference play, where a new season begins. I like where the guys are, in terms of the confidence that we built within ourselves."

How it Happened

Northwestern took a 1-0 lead when Andrew Stevens scored his first goal of the season in the 6th minute off a corner kick, assisted by Ethan Dudley and Vicente Castro.

The Wildcats added another goal from Jason Gajadhar -- his first goal of the season -- in the 46th minute, assisted by Bardia Kimiavi and Castro.

Houston Baptist got on the board to make it a 2-1 match on Luis Poblacion's 70th-minute goal. The Northwestern back line held strong to secure the win.

Game Notes

  • Vicente Castro was credited with assists on both Northwestern goals, his first two of the season and the fourteenth and fifteenth of his career.
  • Andrew Stevens' goal in the 5th minute was his first in a Wildcat uniform and the second of his collegiate career
  • Ethan Dudley tallied his first assist in purple, and the second in his collegiate career
  • Bardia Kimiavi assisted on Gajadhar's goal, his first of the season and eighth of his career
  • Paul Walters collected a win in his first career start, tallying one save in 90 minutes of action
  • Houston Baptist was assessed five yellow cards
  • Northwestern outshot Houston Baptist, 17-6
  • The Wildcats also held the advantage in shots on goal (8-2)
"I think it's going to be extremely important to stay positive, and to know that we have to compete in order to bring out our principles and the way we want to play. Regardless of who the opponent is, it's about how we play," Payne said.

The 'Cats open up Big Ten play on Saturday, September 17 at Rutgers at 6 p.m. CT on B1G+.
