No. 1 Wildcats Earn 3-2 Win over No. 9 Virginia, Stay Undefeated

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Northwestern secured its first top-10 victory of the season Sunday as it beat No. 9 Virginia 3-2 at Lakeside Field. The win moved the Wildcats to 6-0 on the season, the second time in program history they have reached that mark and the first time since 1985 when they started 12-0.
Bente Baekers led the way for the Wildcats, scoring two goals in the first half to give Northwestern an early 2-0 lead. Baekers has scored in every game this season, the longest streak to start a season by a Wildcat since at least 1996 and the longest streak at any time since Baekers scored in 11 straight games from the end of 2019 to the start of 2020.
Kayla Blas and Alia Marshall combined on each of Baekers' first-half goals, pushing Blas' team lead to seven assists on the season and bringing Marshall to three on the season.
Virginia scored to close the first half, but the Wildcats punched back, as Ana Medina Garcia scored in the 34th minute. It marked her third goal of the season and the 15th of her career.
Baekers recorded the assist on Medina Garcia's goal to secure five points in the contest, the 12th game of her career with five of more points. She leads the nation with 12 goals and 26 points.
Virginia managed one more goal in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to catch Northwestern's high-octane offense.
Northwestern has now won 10 games in a row dating back to last season, all against ranked competition. Its the longest win streak in program history since the team won 12 in a row in 1990.
The Wildcats go back on the road next weekend to face Penn on Friday and No. 17 Princeton on Sunday. Game time Friday is set for 2 p.m. CT.
