Wildcats' Offense Continues to Roll, Beats No. 25 UMass 4-1

8/29/2022 12:07:00 PM | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 1 Northwestern picked up its second straight top-25 win to start the 2022 season Monday, taking down No. 25 UMass 4-1 on the road. The win moved the Wildcats to 2-0, their third straight 2-0 start.

After scoring a career-high four goals in the season opener Sunday, Bente Baekers scored two more against UMass, opening the scoring five minutes in and firing her second in the 45th minute.

Baekers, who currently ranks second in the nation among active players in career goals and points, became the first Wildcat to score six goals through the team's first two games since at least 1999. She's also the first player to eclipse five goals in the team's first two games since Chelsea Armstrong scored five in the two games of the 2011 season.

The Minutewomen equalized to close the first quarter, but the Wildcats quickly jumped back in front as Lane Herbert sent home the first goal of her collegiate career in the 22nd minute. The milestone comes one day after the sophomore notched her first and second assists as a Wildcat in the season opener against No. 22 Maine.

Kayla Blas recorded the assist on Herbert's goal to mark her second straight game with an assist. She finished the game with three assists, a new career best. Blas was named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List last week alongside Baekers and midfielder Maddie Zimmer after earning second-team All-Big Ten recognition in 2021. She led Northwestern with 12 assists last year en route to the program's first-ever national title.

Peyton Halsey iced the game for Chicago's Big Ten Team in the 49th minute with her second goal in as many games, putting the Wildats in front 4-1. Just two games into the season, Halsey has already matched her goal total from 2021. Blas and Katie Jones joined the goal on assists, Jones' first of the season. Jones notched five assists as a sophomore last year.

Northwestern has now scored nine goals in its first two games, tied for the second most through two games in Northwestern history. The Wildcats scored 10 goals in their first two games in 2021 and reached nine goals over their first two games in 1984 and 1996.

Chicago's Big Ten Team again dominated on shots, firing 32 to UMass' seven, including a 20-3 disparity in shots on goal.

The Wildcats stay in Massachusetts for their next two games as they are set to face No. 18 Duke and No. 14 Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge next weekend. The first game against Duke is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. CT and Sunday's game against Boston College is slated for 3 p.m. CT.
