EVANSTON, Ill. β€” Northwestern head field hockey coach Tracey Fuchs was named an assistant coach on the United States Senior Women's National Team, USA Field Hockey announced Thursday. Fuchs will serve in the role outside of the NCAA season with Northwestern, focusing on managing and developing college athletes on the national team.

A USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 2014, Fuchs has been a leader on the national team for over three decades as a player and coach. Fuchs served as the head coach of the junior national team from 2005-09, notably guiding the 2008 team to a historic victory at the Pan American Junior Championships in Mexico City, posting a 2-1 overtime win in the finals against Argentina, which had won all five tournaments dating to 1988. In 2005, Fuchs was named USA Field Hockey's National Coach of the YearΒ after leading her squad to a seventh-place finish at the Junior World Cup, the best showing ever by an American team at the event.

Fuchs was also on staff with the senior squad as an assistant coach in 2011, helping lift the team to its first-ever Pan American gold medal and an automatic bid to the 2012 Olympics in London.Β During the summer of 2013, she was an assistant coach for Team USA at the Junior World Cup in Germany.

Arguably the greatest player in the history of USA Field Hockey, FuchsΒ appeared in more international matches (268) than any other player in US history and racked up 69 goals over 17 seasons, 14 of which she spent as the team captain. She was named USA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year in 1990 and 1993 andΒ in 1994 was named to the President's XI, a world all-star team chosen to play the Australian Hockeyroos in honor of the International Hockey Federation's 75th Anniversary.

Fuchs has been Northwestern's head coach since 2009 and has turned the program into a national powerhouse. She guided Chicago's Big Ten Team to its first-ever national championship last November and has led Northwestern to five NCAA Tournament appearances, the 2013 Big Ten regular season title and the 2014 Big Ten Tournament title. Fuchs has posted winning records in 12 of her 13 seasons in Evanston.

The Wildcats open the 2022 season as the preseason No. 1Β team in the nation under Fuchs.

Fuchs joins two other current Wildcats on Team USA. Senior Alia Marshall, 12 USWNT caps,Β and junior Maddie Zimmer, 15 USWNT caps, both helped the senior squad to a fourth place finish at the 2022 Pan American Cup after earning bronze at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championship.
