Northwestern Men's Soccer Announces 2022 Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern men's soccer's 2022 schedule is now official. The 16-game slate, which includes eight games in the Big Ten, features four matches against teams that finished last season ranked in the top 25.
The second season under head coach Russell Payne comes on the heels of a strong close the 2021 campaign. Payne guided Northwestern to the seventh seed in the Big Ten Tournament where it knocked out two-seed Maryland 0-0 (5-3) on penalties before taking three-seed Indiana to overtime in the semifinals. Both Indiana and Maryland finished in the top 25 and competed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats begin the season with three exhibition games, facing Green Bay in Rockford, Ill. on August 13 before going on the road to play Notre Dame on August 17 and coming home against Purdue Fort Wayne on August 20. Notre Dame finished the 2021 season ranked fourth in the nation after winning the ACC and advanced to the 2021 College Cup Semifinals where it fell to the eventual national champion Clemson on penalties.
The regular season begins at home against Chicago State with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT. It marks the second-ever meeting between the programs after they met for the first time last year, also in the season opener. Northwestern's non-conference schedule includes two other games against in-state rivals with Loyola Chicago coming to Evanston on September 2 and the Wildcats traveling to Dekalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois on October 12.
Northwestern kicks off the Big Ten schedule on September 17 at Rutgers, then comes home for its first home conference game against Michigan on September 23. The Wildcats play all eight other teams in the Big Ten.
Chicago's Big Ten Team plays a four-game stretch from September 27 to October 12 against teams that all finished 2021 ranked in the top 25. Indiana finished at No. 14, Penn State at No. 24, Maryland at No. 23 and Northern Illinois at No. 21. The middle two games against Penn State and Maryland will be played at home at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.
The Wildcats close the regular season at home against Wisconsin on October 23, then on the road against Michigan State on October 30. Northwestern beat both those programs in its last two regular season games last season to secure its place in the Big Ten Tournament.
Northwestern's other non-conference opponents are Florida Gulf Coast, Villanova, Western Michigan, Houston Baptist and Milwaukee. It will be the first-ever meeting with Houston Baptist and the second-ever meetings with Florida Gulf Coast and Villanova. The Wildcats played its first game with Villanova last October.
September 9 will mark the eighth meeting between Northwestern and Western Michigan and the first since 2002.
October 19 will mark the 19th meeting between Northwestern and Milwaukee and the first since 2012. The Wildcats advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament later that year.
The 2022 Big Ten Tournament will be held November 6-13 on campus sites.
