North Carolina Slips by Northwestern in NCAA Tournament Semifinals

BALTIMORE – The No. 4 seed Northwestern women's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 seed North Carolina 15-14 in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at Homewood Field in Baltimore. For the third straight season, the Wildcats ended their season one round short of the championship and finish the 2022 campaign with a 16-5 record.
The Tar Heels (21-0) trailed by seven, 13-6, at the start of the fourth quarter and outscored the Wildcats 9-1 in the period. Sam Geiersbach scored the game's final four goals, including the game-winner with 1:03 to play.
Lauren Gilbert tallied a team-high five goals for Northwestern in her final collegiate game. She finishes her career with 225 career goals, the fifth-best mark in school history. Gilbert also finishes fifth in the program single-season record book with 79 goals.
Jill Girardi recorded a hat trick and six draw controls. She totaled 182 draws this season, a single-season program benchmark. Elle Hansen (2), Erin Coykendall, Dylan Amonte, Leah Holmes and Samantha Smith found the back of the net for Northwestern.

Northwestern dominated the game's first quarter and grabbed a 6-0 lead. A strong defensive effort held UNC scoreless in a quarter for the first time all season. The game endured a one-hour and 36-minute lightning delay at the 1:11 mark of the first period. Despite sitting in the locker room, NU held serve and maintained a six-goal advantage of 8-2 at halftime.
Hansen's goal with 5:26 to play in the third quarter extended NU's lead to a game-high eight goals, the largest deficit North Carolina faced all year.
Madison Doucette made nine saves in goal and faced 40 shots. North Carolina's Taylor Moreno had five saves.
North Carolina has won nine straight in the all-time series against Northwestern.
