NU Drops Friday Night Heartbreaker

Champaign, IL - Northwestern Baseball fell to Illinois 7-6 on Friday night, after the Fighting Illini matched a Wildcat rally in the top of the ninth with a walk-off single in the bottom frame.
Down 5-2 heading into the game's final inning, Northwestern loaded the bases before Jay Beshears crushed a go-ahead grand slam over the left field fence to put the Wildcats ahead in Champaign. Beshears is now hitting .367 on the 2022 season with six home runs.
Northwestern took the lead in the second inning after Vincent Bianchina's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field that put the Wildcats ahead. Later in the game, with Illinois threatening and the bases loaded with two outs, Bianchina snared a liner at third base and threw to second for a force out to end the inning.
Reed Smith, Parker Hanks and Jack Sauser combined for three innings of scoreless relief work in the middle innings.
