EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern honored its three seniors on Senior Day before enjoying a 7-0 win against Indiana at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 37 in the country, improved to 12-6 overall and 7-1 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers moved to 9-11 and 2-5 in conference play.
The 'Cats honored Hannah McColgan, Ema Lazic and Vanessa Streng before the match.
McColgan has been a strong contributor for the Wildcats for four years with an impressive doubles record, including NCAA Tournament victories, an appearance in the ITA National Indoor Championships and a trip this past fall to the ITA All-American Championships.
Streng represented the 'Cats on the court fiercely in her first two campaigns, and has been a selfless, dedicated team member for her entire career.
Lazic, who joined the program as a graduate transfer after four years at Duke, has made an immediate impact on and off the court, delivering in singles with a 12-2 record and acting as a role model for the team with her professional attitude.
The afternoon played out about as well as it could for the Wildcats, starting with a well-earned doubles point thanks to wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Briana Crowley and Christina Hand won first with a 6-3 set before Sydney Pratt and McColgan clinched the point with a 6-4 win.
Indiana did not have a player for the No. 6 spot in singles, so the Wildcats began the second portion of the match with a 2-0 lead.
Maria Shusharina made the match 3-0 with a strong 6-2, 6-3 win over Alex Staiculescu at No. 2.
Justine Leong clinched the match at 4-0 with an impressive second set comeback, rallying from 0-5 down to claim a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5.
Sydney Pratt scored the fifth point for the 'Cats with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Mila Mejic at No. 3.
Ema Lazic and Clarissa Hand both finished tough matches after the overall result was decided with strong third set tiebreaker performances, including a nai- biting 11-9 win for Lazic at No. 4.
The Wildcats have three matches remaining in Big Ten play, and will rest up before facing just one opponent next weekend: rivals Illinois on Sunday.
