Deakin Wins Third Big Ten Title, Nine 'Cats Secure NCAA Qualifiers

LINCOLN, Neb. – Northwestern's Ryan Deakin became just the third wrestler in program history to win three individual Big Ten titles, headlining a banner weekend at the Big Ten Championships for Northwestern wrestling.
Deakin was one of six Wildcat wrestlers to earn a Top-5 podium finish at the Big Ten Championships, propelling the Wildcats to a 90.5 team score and a fifth place finish in the nation's premiere wrestling conference. The fifth place finish marks the Wildcats' highest finish at the conference championships since 2006.
In total, nine Northwestern wrestlers earned automatic qualifiers at the 2022 NCAA Championships, taking place March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
With a 7-2 decision over No. 3 seed Will Lewan (Michigan) to secure the title at 157 lbs, Deakin joins Wesley Brown (1931-33) and Jake Herbert (2006-07, 09) as the only Northwestern wrestlers to win three Big Ten Championships. He also becomes just the second Big Ten Wrestler ever, and first in 65 years, to be a three-time Big Ten champion in the 157 lb weight class also Mike Rodriguez (Michigan, 1955-57).
Both Michael DeAugustino and Troy Fisher locked up fourth place finishes at 125 lbs and 174 lbs, respectively. It marks DeAugustino's third Top-5 finish at the Big Ten Championships in as many appearances, while Fisher earns a spot on the podium for the first time while securing his first-ever berth at the NCAA Championships.
With wins in their respective fifth-place matches, Lucas Davison, Chris Cannon, David Ferrante all secured Top-5 podium spots during Sunday's final fourth session. Cannon and Ferrante won via medical forfeits by their opponents en route to each securing their second-straight NCAA apperance, while Davison defeated Illinois' Luke Luffman by a 3-1 decision to lock up his third career Top-5 finish at Big Tens and his first in the heavyweight division.
In addition, Frankie Tal-Shahar earned a spot on the podium with a seventh place finish at his first-ever Big Ten Championships. With an NCAA automatic qualifier spot on the line, Tal-Shahar defeated Purdue's Parker Filius by an 11-6 decision in the seventh place match to lock up his ticket to Detroit. Both Andrew Davison and Jack Jessen also locked up automatic qualifier bids at 197 and 184 lbs, respectively.
After a pair of narrow losses in the 149 lb bracket this weekend, reigning All-American Yahya Thomas is a near lock to secure an at-large bid for the NCAA Championships and give Northwestern a perfect 10-for-10 mark of NCAA qualifiers. The NCAA selection committee will announce at-large selections on Tuesday, March 8.
