3/25/2022 5:30:00 PM | Women's Fencing
South Bend, Ind. - Northwestern secured a top-ten team finish and Sky Miller earned a top-ten individual finish for the second-straight year at the 2022 NCAA Fencing Championships at the Castellan Family Fencing Center in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Miller finished ninth in the sabre competition, while Sarah Filby and Hanna Lipthay, representing Northwestern in the foil and epee, finished 13th and 18th respectively.
Northwestern earned the highest team finish of any school at the NCAA Championships with three qualifiers.
Returning to South Bend, where she helped Northwestern defeat No. 1 Notre Dame at the DeCicco Duals earlier this season, Miller entered the NCAA Championships as the 20-seed in the 24-fencer sabre competition. Twelve victories in pool bouts helped the sophomore from Durham, North Carolina shoot up the standings to secure a top-ten individual finish on the biggest stage in college fencing.
Along the way, Miller defeated six Ivy League fencers and continued to prove herself as one of the top sabrists in the country.
Lipthay went 8-15 in the epee competition to finish 18th in her first season as a member of the Northwestern fencing program. Filby, a graduate student, went 12-11 to finish 13th in the foil competition.
After concluding NCAA competition, Northwestern will now will look ahead to the North American Cup later this spring.
