'Cats Battle SIU, Butler in Carbondale

Carbondale, IL - Northwestern Baseball heads downstate this weekend for a pair of games against Southern Illinois and Butler, beginning on Friday night at 6 p.m. with a matchup against SIU.
A 12 p.m. game against Butler on Saturday will be followed by a game against each team on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. against the Salukis.
After sweeping a four-game home stand with wins over St. Thomas and Evansville, the Wildcats head into their final non-conference weekend of the season with plenty of momentum. A victory on Friday would give Northwestern their first five-game winning streak since 2019.
The Wildcats outscored Evansville 18-5 in a pair of wins on Sunday, led by an impressive performance by the Calarco brothers in game one. Anthony Calarco smacked his third home run of the season and Alex Calarco turned in a three-hit game in his college and Northwestern debut.
Jay Beshears helped carry the offense in the second game of the afternoon, finishing a home run shy of the cycle with a pair of RBIs. Andrew Pinkston posted his best series of the season against the Purple Aces, hitting .429 with an RBI across both games.
On the mound this weekend, the Wildcats will lean on a pair of newcomers in Sean Sullivan and Michael Farinelli. Sullivan (3-0) has emerged as one of the top freshman in the Big Ten with a 2.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts across five starts for Northwestern.
Farinelli, a graduate transfer from Middlebury, has posted back-to-back quality starts against St. Thomas and Evansville, including six-innings of one-hit baseball in a win over the Purple Aces on Sunday.
