'Cats Stay Hot in Evansville Sweep

3/21/2022 12:45:00 PM | Baseball

Evanston, IL - Northwestern Baseball ran their winning streak to four games with a Sunday sweep of Evansville at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park, defeating the Purple Aces 10-4 in the first game of the series before adding an 8-1 victory in the second game of the day.

Evansville, fresh off their own sweep of No. 18 Tulane, were outscored by Northwestern 18-5 in the two-game series, after Saturday afternoon's game was canceled due to weather.

Reigning Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Week Sean Sullivan got the start in Game One for Northwestern, improving to 3-0 on the season with a five-inning, five strikeout performance against Evansville. But the first-year who stole the show in a 10-4 victory for the Wildcats was Alex Calarco, playing his first game of the season due to injury.

Calarco reached base in the first three hits of his Northwestern career, as the Wilmette native went 3-5 with an RBI in the first game of his Northwestern career. His older brother, Anthony Calarco, put the Wildcats ahead for good in the first game of the day with solo shot to center field, before Bianchina, Alex Calarco and Bennet Markinson padded the lead.

In the second game, Michael Farinelli got the start for Northwestern and delivered the latest in a string of impressive performances for the Middlebury transfer. Farinelli allowed one run over six innings, striking out seven Purple Aces while allowing just one hit on the afternoon.

He received plenty of support at the plate, as Jay Beshears three-hit game included a pair of RBIs to keep the Wildcats cooking on Sunday afternoon. On the mound, Mike Doherty and Coby Moe combined for three strong innings in relief to keep Northwestern undefeated at home in the 2022 season.

The 'Cats will hit the road for their next three series, beginning with a trip to South Bend on Tuesday to face Notre Dame at 3 p.m. CT.
