EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern field hockey's coaches have been named the NFHCA West Region Coaching Staff of the Year, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Tuesday. It marks the second straight year and the third time in program history that Northwestern has won regional Staff of the Year honors.
Under Head Coach Tracey Fuchs, Associate Head Coach Georgia Holland and Assistant Coach Will Byrne, the Wildcats won a program-record 20 games en route to their second straight appearance in the NCAA Championship game in 2022. They also advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the first time since 2014.
The reigning NFHCA National Staff of the Year guided Northwestern to a nation-leading eight student-athletes named NFHCA All-Region and three student-athletes named All-Big Ten, including Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Kayla Blas.
Fuchs, who just finished her 14th season at the helm in Evanston, has turned Northwestern into a perennial powerhouse, leading the Wildcats to its first-ever trips to the NCAA Championship game and lifting the national title for the first time in program history. The winningest coach in Northwestern history, Fuchs has compiled a record of 196-99 since taking over in 2009. She has posted a winning record in 13 of her 14 seasons as the head coach.
Holland joined the coaching staff as an assistant in 2018 and was promoted to associate head coach in Jan. 2021. She has played a pivotal role in Evanston, helping guide the Wildcats to NCAA Tournament appearances in four of her five seasons on staff.
Byrne signed on with Northwestern in 2016 as an assistant coach and also serves as the Wildcats' recruiting coordinator. During Byrne's tenure, Northwestern student-athletes have garnered nine All-American recognitions, including four first-team All-American nods, and 20 All-Big Ten honors.
