EVANSTON, Ill. – The reigning national champions are headed back to the NCAA Tournament. No. 4 Northwestern earned its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the team learned through the NCAA Selection Show Sunday night. It will also mark the Wildcats' 18th appearance in program history.

The Wildcats secured the No. 2 seed, the highest NCAA Tournament seed in program history. Northwestern has improved its finish in the tournament each year during its current stretch of postseason appearances. That improvement culminated in the Wildcats' historic run to the 2021 national championship, the first in program. Northwestern dominated last year's tournament, posting three shutouts over top-10 competitionΒ and never trailing while outscoring its opponents 7-1. Four Wildcats were named to the 2021 All-Tournament Team, including Maddie Zimmer, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.Β

Chicago's Big Ten Team takes its title defense into this year's NCAA Tournament coming off an outstanding regular season and start to tournament season. The Wildcats started the season as the No. 1 team in the country for the first time in program history and lived up to the billing, rattling off eight straight wins to start 8-0 for the first time in 37 years. They finished the regular season on a five-game win streak, momentum they carried all the way to the Big Ten Tournament championship game, their first appearance in the title game since 2014.

The 'Cats currently sit at 17-4, a resume that includes a perfect 10-0 record against non-conference opponents (including seven ranked non-conference opponents) and five top-10 wins, most recently taking down No. 2 Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.Β
