How it Happened
The Wildcats came out of the gate hot, taking the first three shots of the game and forcing the Maryland Goalkeeper to make a pair of saves. No. 7 Maryland settled in and earned a penalty kick in the 31st minute, but hit the crossbar to keep things scoreless. The two teams finished the first 45 minutes deadlocked at 0. Maryland looked poised to take the lead again when the Terps earned their second penalty kick of the game, but Christian Garner was up to the task and made the save to keep UMD off the scoresheet. Maryland's breakthrough came in the 76th minute when a loose ball fell to Colin Griffith inside the six-yard box, who slotted it home. Christian Garner led Northwestern with six saves. The Wildcats recorded five shots in the loss, three of them on goal. Northwestern faced 13 Maryland shots, eight of them on goal.
