Northwestern Takes Down Valparaiso 81-47

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern collected their third straight victory with an 81-47 win over the Beacons at home on Sunday.
The Wildcats (4-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Sydney Wood, who had 19 points, five assists and three steals. Caileigh Walsh added 18 points and two blocks and Jillian Brown chipped in as well with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Northwestern offense was impressive from deep, pouring in nine threes on 25 attempts. Brown led the way with four treys for the Wildcats.
Northwestern also did a great job disrupting Valparaiso shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Walsh's two rejections led the way individually for the Wildcats.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 10-8 advantage, Northwestern went on a 9-0 run with 4:19 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 19-8. The Wildcats entered the quarter break with a 22-10 advantage. Northwestern relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
The 'Cats kept their first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Walsh, to increase its lead to 34-16. The Wildcats proceeded to tack on five points to that lead and enjoyed a 45-22 advantage heading into halftime. Northwestern forced four Valparaiso turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
After intermission, Northwestern held on to its advantage and owned a 56-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Northwestern played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
Northwestern kept widening that lead, expanding it to 72-43 before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 81-43 with 2:13 to go in the contest. The Beacons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Wildcats still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-47 win. Northwestern got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 12 of its 25 total points.
