WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Junior Jasmine Nocentini broke her own school record in the 50-yard freestyle twice as the Northwestern women and men ended night one of the Purdue Invitational, sitting in second and fourth place, respectively.
Nocentini, a two-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Week this season, led off the women's 200-yard freestyle relay in 21.76, surpassing her 21.78 from the Big Ten Championships in February.
The Padova, Italy native was back in the water later in the session for the individual event and shaved almost two-tenths off the less than two-hour-old record, posting a time of 21.59 for the win, good for third fastest in the NCAA this season.
Tyler Lu impressed on the men's side, finishing second in the men's 200-yard individual medley in 1:45.36. Lu's swim was one of five runner-up performances for the Wildcats on the night as the women's 200-yard free relay (Nocentini, Audrey Yu, Lindsay Ervin, and Ally Larson), Lola Mull (women's 500-yard freestyle), Marie Hopkins (women's 3-meter diving), and women's 400-yard medley relay (Justine Murdock, Nocentini, Miriam Guevara and Ervin) also secured second place finishes.
Ashley Strouse and Tona Zinn rounded out the podium finishes for Northwestern in session three, grabbing third in the women's 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, respectively.
Competition continues tomorrow morning at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center with preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, women's 1-meter diving, and men's 3-meter diving.
