EVANSTON, Ill. – For the first time in school history the Northwestern men's basketball team will meet Georgetown on the hardwood, as the Wildcats travel to Washington, D.C. as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games at 5:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 15. FS1 will televise the game with Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and Dickey Simpkins (analyst) on the call. Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Nate Taphorn (analyst) have the radio call on AM 720 WGN.
The Wildcats (2-0) are perfect through the first two games of a season for the seventh time under head coach Chris Collins. Northwestern held Northern Illinois to a 33.3% mark from the field to earn a 63-46 home win on Friday (Nov. 11) night. Senior forward Robbie Beran led the team in scoring for the second consecutive game by posting 15 points, with eight coming in the game's first six minutes. Junior guard Ty Berry recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Boo Buie added 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists against the Huskies and is the only Northwestern player since at least 2010-11 to register at least 29 points, 13 assists and 13 rebounds over the first two games of a season. The senior guard is 18 points away from becoming the 39th 1,000-point scorer in program history. Against NIU, Buie surpassed the 300 career assist mark and is ninth in the program's record book with 306 dimes.
Beran leads the team averaging 17.5 points per game, and his 35 points are the most over a two-game span in his career. Berry leads the team averaging 9.0 rebounds per game.
Despite not meeting before, there are many staff connections between the two teams. Georgetown assistant coach Pat Baldwin played at Northwestern (1990-94) and had one of the most notable careers in school history. His 272 career steals are still a program record, and he ranks third in career marks in assists (452) and fourth in free throw percentage (.880). Baldwin was named the 1994 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and served as an assistant on Collins' staff at NU from 2013-17.
Northwestern special assistant to the head coach Brian James and Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing were both assistant coaches on the Washington Wizards staff in 2002-03 under head coach Doug Collins, Chris Collins' father.
Appearing in its first Gavitt Tipoff Games since 2019, Northwestern is 1-2 all-time in the event, which matches up teams from the Big Ten and BIG EAST conferences. The Wildcats defeated Providence 72-63 in 2019 in its last game in the event. NU dropped games in 2017 to Creighton, 92-88, and in 2016 to Butler, 70-68.
The Hoyas (2-0) notched home victories over Coppin State (99-89, OT) and Green Bay (92-58) to begin their season. Georgetown was picked 10th in the preseason BIG EAST coaches' poll and infused its roster this season with nine additions, including seven transfers. Sophomore guard Primo Spears, a transfer from Duquesne, leads the team averaging 24.5 points per game. Senior center Qudus Wahab is averaging a team-best 8.5 boards per game.
The Wildcats begin their 2022-23 MTE, the Cancun Challenge, with an on-campus game at Welsh-Ryan Arena against preseason Horizon League favorite Purdue Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Nov. 18.
