PHILADELPHIA - The No. 9 ranked Northwestern fencing team showed out at the Temple Open led by five top-eight finishes. First-year Epeeists Anna Damratoski and Karen Wang placed third, as did two-time All-American sabreur Sky Miller. Two other first-years rounded out the top finishes with a fifth place finish by sabreur Megumi Oishi and an eighth-place finish by epeeist Lia Douglas.
In a strong field of competitors featuring six top-15 ranked schools, a handful of Wildcats just narrowly missed out on the medal rounds falling in tough-fought bouts in the round of 16. First-year foilist Juliana Hung led the way for this group with a ninth-place finish. She was joined by fellow foilist Rowan Park who finished 12th in the same event. Rounding out this group, epeeist Hanna Lipthay and sabreur Kailing Sathyanath finished 13th in their respective events.
The Temple Open featured one round of pool play with a 20-30 percent cut of the field, followed by a second round of pool play. From there, competitors were seeded into a direct elimination bracket to determine the champion.
This event was the final individual competition before the 'Cats begin regular season team matches next weekend at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. NU will compete at Cadet Gymnasium on November 4-5.
