OXFORD, Ohio – No. 4 Northwestern captured a 3-1 win over Miami (OH) Sunday to finish the regular season. The victory brought Northwestern to a 15-3 record heading into postseason play.
Lane Hebert opened the scoring in the second quarter, finishing off a penalty corner opportunity from point-blank range. It marked Herbert's fourth goal of the season and Northwestern's first first-half goal in four games.
Lauren Wadas extended the lead on the other side of halftime, finding the back of the cage for her second goal in three games, the other being the double-overtime golden goal to walk off Michigan. It was also Wadas' fourth goal of the season.
The RedHawks answered moments later to cut the Wildcats' lead to one, but it wouldn't be enough. Fifth-year forward Bente Baekers fired her nation-leading 22nd goal of the season to ice the game in the 47th minute.
The win wrapped up Northwestern's non-conference schedule with a perfect 10-0 record with seven of those wins coming against ranked opponents.
Chicago's Big Ten Team dominated the stat sheet in shots (18-4), shots on goal (8-3) and penalty corners (17-2). The Wildcats have out shot opponents 67-25 and won the penalty corner battle 140-83 this season.
Next, Northwestern head to the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio as the three seed. The Wildcats will face six-seed Rutgers in the first round set to begin at 4 p.m. CT on Big Ten Plus.
