10/2/2022 5:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, -- Northwestern and No. 20 Penn State played to a 2-2 draw Sunday (Oct. 2) at home at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium.

The tie moved Northwestern's record to 1-6-3 overall and 0-3-1 in Big Ten play.

How it Happened

Penn State took a 1-0 lead when Ben Liscum scored in the 24th minute, assisted by Seth Kuhn and Liam Butts.

The Wildcats responded quickly, leveling the match on a goal from Justin Weiss -- his third goal of the season -- in the 27th minute.

Penn State then busted up the 1-1 tie on Peter Mangione's 49th-minute goal, assisted by Butts.

The 'Cats equalized with a 53rd-minute goal from Ethan Dudley, his second goal of the season.

The 2-2 scoreline held for the remainder of the game.

Game Notes

  • The draw was Northwestern's first against a ranked opponent since a scoreless tie against No. 10 Maryland in the 2021 Big Ten Tournament in which the Wildcats advanced on penalties
  • Justin Weiss tallied his third goal of the season. Sunday's game marked his second consecutive contest with a goal
  • Christian Garner collected one save for the Wildcats out of 10 total Nittany Lions shots
  • Northwestern registered five shots on goal
  • NU held a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal

When asked about the Wildcats' quick responses to Penn State's two goals, head coach Russell Payne was encouraged by his team's performance. "It means we're improving. We're growing and we're trying to get better every day. It's all we can do. We train it and we try to get it right. As long as the guys keep believing and digging, we will get better."

Northwestern continues its homestand when it hosts No. 8 Maryland Sunday, October 9 at Noon CT on B1G+. Admission is free for all fans.
