No. 3 Northwestern places five in Top-20 to run away from field of Midwest's best
PEORIA, Illinois -- Northwestern cross country placed all five scoring runners in the Top-20 to race to an emphatic victory at the 2022 Bradley Pink Invitational, the final tune-up before the Big Ten Championships for the Midwest Region's No. 3 ranked squad.
2022 Bradley Pink Invitational - RESULTS
In the 6K Women's Red Race, featuring some of the Midwest Region's top runners, Rachel McCardell (20:11.5) led the way for the 'Cats, crossing the line fourth. She hit the 2K and 3K splits in ninth before steadily reeling in competitors over the final half of the race and climbing into the Top-4 by the final thousand meters. It was the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, native's third consecutive Top-10 finish and her best 6K time of the season, dropping 19-seconds off her result at the Gans Creek Classic earlier this month.
Behind McCardell came a tightly-bunched pack of Wildcats, with the team's next four scoring runners all finishing within ten seconds. First came sophomore Ava Earl (13th; 20:38.9), narrowing edging out classmate Anna Hightower (14th; 20:39.3). Shortly thereafter Kalea Bartolotto (18th; 20:46.9) crossed the line and Ari Marks (20:48.6) wrapped up the scoring quintet for head coach Jill Miller. While Northwestern put all five scorers in the Top-20, runner-up Illinois placed three in the group and no other team in the field had more than two.
The Wildcats will have a weekend off to train in preparation for the looming 2022 Big Ten Championships, hosted in Ann Arbor by the University of Michigan on Friday, October 28. Northwestern got a look at the course in September at the Big Ten Preview, and finished a strong third behind the hosts and Ohio State.
