EVANSTON, Ill. – Behind Ana Medina Garcia's walk-off goal in the 64th minute, No. 3 Northwestern took a 2-1 overtime victory against No. 21 Ohio State Sunday. The win moved the Wildcats to 12-3 on the year and 3-1 in overtime games.
Tied 1-1 to start overtime, Medina Garcia took the game into her hands, dribbling down the left sideline before shaking a Buckeye defender and finding the back of the cage. It marked Medina Garcia's sixth goal of the season and her second career golden goal in overtime, the other also coming against Ohio State in spring 2021.
Medina Garcia is the third different Wildcat to score a game-winning goal in overtime this season, joining Alia Marshall and Peyton Halsey.
The Wildcats and Buckeyes battled out a defensive showdown through most of regulation with the score knotted at zero going into the fourth quarter. Goalkeeper Annabel Skubisz anchored the Northwestern defense, tying her career high with 11 saves, the second time she's accomplished the feat this season.
Skubisz valiently kept the score at zero for much of the contest with a heroic save on an Ohio State penalty stroke in the second quarter and five saves in less than a minute early in the third.
Fifth-year forward Bente Baekers opened the scoring early in the fourth corner off a penalty corner that deflected off a Buckeye stick into the cage. It marked Baekers' 20th goal of the season, making her the first player in the NCAA to reach 20 this year. Her 2022 campaign is now the ninth individual season in Wildcat history with 20 or more goals.
Kayla Blas was credited with the assist, extending her team-leading total to nine.
Northwestern returns home next Friday for another ranked Big Ten matchup as it takes on No. 10 Michigan at 3 p.m. CT. The game will be the last regular season game in Evanston this season and tickets will be free for fans of all ages. It will also be televised on the Big Ten Network.
